New Products launch May 26, 2018 in collaboration with The North Carolina Arboretum
The North Carolina Arboretum and its mission as a public, conservation-focused botanical garden is near and dear to our hearts. The Making Scents exhibition that will be showcased at the Arboretum beginning May 26, 2018 has provided us an opportunity for us to express this appreciation and pay tribute to the natural legacy of the Bent Creek Watershed and the Arboretum gardens. So, we've created fragrances that incorporate the native scents of our woodlands and also the horticultural heritage that is represented by the Arboretum’s formal gardens.
Here in the Southern Appalachian highlands, we have some of the highest plant biodiversity in North America. The forests, fields, and stream beds here have treasures rarely seen in perfumes--Calycanthus, sweet shrub, whose flowers smell like strawberries and whose steam-distilled twigs have the impossible, enticing aroma of spice cookies, Pycnanthemum, mountain mint, fresh, cool, with a pungent, wild note not found in the garden varieties, and spice bush, Lindera benzoin, whose leaves, and twigs have a unique lemony-spice and whose red berries, with their white sap, became the mountain allspice for early European mountain settlers. Our woods also offer up plentiful evergreens--eastern red cedar (Juniper virginiana) and its fresh juniper fruits, eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), Fraser fir (Abies Fraserii), and white pine (Pinus strobus). And in our fields and meadows, goldenrod (Solidago spp.) flowers and sweet goldenrod greens form the undertone of a warm golden late summer afternoon.
In collaboration with Madison County essential oil distiller Ian Montgomery of Blue Ridge Aromatics, we have blended unique aspects of our landscape into fragrances that capture the feeling of a walk through this beautiful and varied landscape, including perhaps the chance stumbling upon a garden of local bonsai, or a dew-soaked flower garden.
Our skin care company, Mountains to Sea, was born of exactly the same reverence for our landscape and natural heritage that we have brought to the crafting of the Arboretum’s signature fragrances. We have relished the opportunity to collaborate with the creative staff of The N.C. Arboretum, Blue Ridge Aromatics, and local design team Tim and Meagan Scroggs of HNYCMB Creative, to create products that evoke the joy that we feel every time we pass through the Arboretum gates.
The Appalachian Forest and Mountain Gardens Collections will be available beginning May 26, 2018 at the Connections Gallery gift shop, here on our website, and at the booth we will be sharing with Blue Ridge Aromatics at the first of the 2018 Venture Local Fairs in downtown Asheville. Coming soon thereafter to our regional retailers!
